Today robotics technology is broadening its applications from factory to more general-purpose applications in domestic and public use, e.g., partner to the elderly, aid to doctors and nurses, search and rescue, etc. If robotics technology is to be as successful in such unstructured and dynamic environments as compared to structured industrial applications, it will need to meet new levels of robustness, physical dexterity and cognitive capability. This presentation discusses an emerging field called cognitive robotics from developmental point of view which I call a "synthetic approach". The term "synthetic", in the sense of experimental synthesis as opposed to analysis, was first used in robotics by the cyberneticist/neuroscientist Valentino Braitenberg (1926-2011) in his book, Vehicles: Experiments in Synthetic Psychology . In the book, he presents a series of robot-like vehicles (he called them thought experiments) of increasing complexity exhibiting seemingly sophisticated behaviors.


Following general introduction of the field, key features of cognitive systems and robotics are introduced. As one example of a synthetic approach, a cognitive robotic architecture developed in our center will be described and two case studies, (1)use of internal rehearsal for performance enhancement and (2) learning self affordance through exploration, will be discussed.

Professor Kawamura received the B.E. degree from Waseda University, Tokyo, the M.S. degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and Ph. D. degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, all in electrical engineering. Since 1981, he held various positions within Vanderbilt University where he currently is a professor of electrical and computer engineering.


Professor Kawamura is an internationally known researcher and educator in the fields of intelligent systems, cognitive systems and humanoid robotics. He has published over 170 research papers, a book, and book chapters in the fields of intelligent systems, cognitive robotics, humanoid robotics, human-robot interactions, and computational intelligence. He directs research in cognitive control, robot skill learning, and brain-inspired cognitive robot architecture at Vanderbilt. He was a visiting Professor of Cybernetics at the University of Reading, UK in June-December, 2004 where he conducted research on cognitive robotics and control.


Dr. Kawamura is the Founding Chair of the Technical Committee on Service Robots for the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society and was General Chairs of three IEEE Conferences (SMC 2000, RO-MAN 2005 and Humanoids 2010). He is a member of the Editorial Board of International Journal of Humanoid Robotics, and International Journal of Human-Friendly Welfare Robotic Systems.
