Dr. Heinrich Rohrer(ハインリッヒ ローラー博士) ノーベル物理学賞受賞者(1986年) * 走査型トンネル顕微鏡の開発 「The Magic of Small and Smaller: Nano-technology」 Miniaturization or "Small and Smaller" made microtechnology. Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) was the key to the sweeping technological and economical success story of microelectronics. "Smaller, faster, cheaper" became the slogan of data processing, microelectronics penetrated and now rules nearly every technical domain. The most obvious notion and at present financially the most rewarding prospect of continued miniaturization is seen in nanoelectronics. However, nanotechnology offers much more. It will become the most powerful link of electronics to the action through tremendously fast and sensitive mechanical, chemical and thermal sensors and actuators and processors. Ultimately, VLSI will include sensing, processing and actuation of whatever kind in one, each of them with the task appropriate for the most efficient and elegant solution. Science prepared the grounds for the breathtaking pace of microelectronics well ahead: quantum mechanics, electron microscopy, and understanding and preparation of semiconductor materials, just to name a few, came many decades earlier. For nanotechnology, the lead of science is much smaller. Science and technology go ever more hand in hand: no technology without science, no science without technology: Both rely on "insight motivated and action driven" scientists. |
