Khuat Hien Thi Thu, 2nd year PhD student of Mizutani Lab of Materials School, achieved Student Awards at ALC '11 International Conference (8th International Symposium on Atomic Level Characterizations for New Materials and Devices '11 (ALC'11)). This year the symposium was held in Korea and there were more than100scientists around the world. Descriptions of new applications and instrumentation for various analytical techniques of surface and interface analysis are solicited in this symposium. The goal is to promote stimulating discussions among researchers specializing in different probe methods. The symposium also encourages discussion of fundamental problems to be solved in the further development of atomic level characterization of materials, including approaches based on theory and simulations.

Presented title:
Hydrogen desorption from a flat Si(111)1x1 surface studied by Sum Frequency Microscopy
Content of Awarded Presentation:
In this study, isothermal hydrogen desorption from a Si(111)1×1 surface was investigated by taking Sum Frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy at 430oC. The best fitting curve of the isothermal desorption is first order. We have also taken the SF intensity images of monohydride species on the surface after heating for 10 seconds at each temperature of 300, 350, 400, 450 and 470 oC. The SF intensity images indicate that the hydrogen desorbs homogeneously in micron scale. This result suggests that the hydrogen atoms diffused homogeneously on the Si(111)1×1 surface.
Comment
First I would like to thank to ALC’11’ organizers who gave me a nice chance to attend so interesting international Symposium and handed me the Student Award. I could not express my moved feeling when I received the certificate. Also, special thanks go to my supervisor Professor Goro Mizutani, who gave me the strong supports in and out of research, while also proving support as a great mental help. Not forget to express many thanks to all members in our laboratory, especially Assistant Professor Yoshihiro Miyauchi whose supports and encouragement are invaluable to me. I promise to study harder in future and get better results.
