Dr. Shungo Kawanishi, professor of the Institute of General Education at JAIST and Mr. Steven Nishida, the International Relations manager at NAIST performed a joint poster presentation at 2012 NAFSA Annual Conference and received a certificate of the best poster presentation. NAFSA holds its annual conference around the end of May and the beginning of June every year. This conference is by far the largest conference of international educators with more than 8,000 participants from over 100 countries each year. This year the conference was held at George Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas.
The Date of Receiving Award: May 30, 2012
The Contents of the Poster Presentation:
I (Kawanishi) and Mr. Steven Nishida, the International Relations manager at NAIST jointly presented a poster titled “Introduction to Global Education Approach” as a proposal for educational reforms in the global era. The poster focused on three aspects of educational reforms, i.e., Global Collaboration to work together with universities and research institutes overseas to solve global problems through research collaborations, Global Contribution to contribute to the development of education overseas through education programs, and Institutional Globalization to globalize environment and systems on campus and knowledge and consciousness among faculty, staff and students. The poster presented concrete practices in the three aspects by NAIST and JAIST, too. In the rapidly globalizing world, international education aiming at peaceful coexistence based on mutual understanding no longer seems to hold primary significance. The poster appealed the significance of global education aiming at solving multi-faceted but common global issues which threaten all the humankinds through intellectual collaborations. Dual Degree Program, Dual Education Program, Institute of General Education, Use of English as the Lecture Language and so on were introduced as concrete practices of global education approach at JAIST. The Annual Conference had three to four time blocks (2 hours per block) for different topics of poster presentation everyday and each time block had more than 100 posters presented. Starting this year NAFSA awards the best poster presentation of each block with the certificates, one of which NAIST and JAIST received this time.
Award Recipient’s Comments:
It was my third participation in NAFSA Annual Conference. Every time I presented a poster focusing on globalization of education and research at JAIST. Many people who visited our poster showed a great interest in JAIST’s endeavors and recognized JAIST as a frontier academic institute in the global era. Taking this award as a momentum, I would like to exert further efforts to enhance the level of recognition JAIST in the world.
