Admissions Outline
When evaluating applicants in the oral examination, we put emphasis on their basic academic ability and motivation to conduct research after their enrollment.
JAIST accepts applications from university alumni, working professionals, and international students irrespective of their undergraduate major.Master's ProgramSelection is conducted by an oral examination. The total time of the examination is 30 minutes per student.
- Presentation and oral examination about the short essay submitted at the time of applying.
- Oral examination based on keywords from the applicant’s specialty and the research area in which the applicant has a deep interest.
- Oral examination to evaluate applicant’s basic English proficiency and specialized knowledge in their specialty area of study*.
*Applicants for School of Information Science have an oral examination to evaluate their mathematical ability as well as English proficiency.
Doctoral ProgramSelection is conducted by an oral examination.
Applicants will be evaluated by the following criterion:- Oral examination and interview about master’s thesis and research outline
The examination and interview will be conducted in either English or Japanese.
A paper examination may take place where necessary in order to confirm an applicant's fundamental scholastic ability and their knowledge of their specialty. - Official Transcript
- Proof of English Language Proficiency
JAIST has special examination “Examination for 5D Program with scholarship” for applicants who wish to obtain a doctorate through a 5 year integrated program.
Successful applicants for this examination are entitled to receive scholarship throughout the 2-year master’s program and the 3-year doctoral program.
