Approaches to Internationalization
International Advanced Seminar (IAS)JAIST conducts International Advanced Seminar, focusing on the theme of JAIST’s unique research achievements. Students and young researchers from abroad are welcome to attend the seminar. This seminar provides participants with opportunities to learn JAIST’s leading-edge research activities and develop global networks of young researchers.
Academic Exchanges between Overseas Universities and Research Institutes
JAIST has also been active in holding international symposiums to promote research information exchange with overseas research institutes and interaction among researchers with an aim to elevate the research level in science and technology not only of JAIST but also Japan and the world.In order to promote world-leading researches and train students to contribute to the international society, JAIST has actively worked on academic exchanges between overseas research institutes through human exchanges and collaborative researches. JAIST has concluded academic exchange agreements with 106 institutes from 29 countries as of January, 2013.
Programs for Young Researcher Overseas VisitJAIST has supported young researchers to make a leap forward on the international stage through the international programs of JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science): “Institutional Program for Young Researcher Overseas Visits (2009-2012)” and “Young Researcher Overseas Visits Program for Vitalizing Brain Circulation (2010-2012)” with an aim to provide young researchers with an opportunity for conducting research abroad and produce competent researchers equipped with an international perspective.
Joint Education Programs with Overseas UniversitiesJAIST has carried out “Joint Graduate Education Program” and “Dual Degree Program”. In these programs, JAIST and overseas universities cooperate in combining the world-leading scientific and technological researches and advanced education contents in order to produce human resources with an international perspective to contribute to development of science and technology domestically and internationally.
Acceptance of Overseas Students and Faculty MembersJAIST’s ratio of overseas students and that of faculty members are one of the highest in the national universities. In order to attract excellent students and faculty members from all over the world, we are improving the condition for accepting international individuals.
Obtaining Degree with English
• 29% of students are from abroad (excluding research students) (257 out of 891 students are from abroad)
• 18% of faculty members are from abroad (34 out of 185 faculty members are from abroad)
*as of May 1, 2012At JAIST, all the lectures in the doctoral courses are taught in English language and the number of master’s lectures taught in English is gradually increasing. Students can obtain their degree without command of Japanese language in all the doctoral programs and a part of the master’s programs.
Bilingual EnvironmentAll the important communication on campus is available in both English and Japanese. English-speaking staff members are allocated in sections where foreign students and faculty members often visit, and English is the main language to communicate at laboratories where many foreign students and faculty members belong.
JAIST International HouseJAIST International House is available for visiting researchers from overseas. Each room fully furnished, guests can live in comfort from the day they arrive. Satellite channels and a computer terminal for 24-hour internet and campus LAN are available in the room.
