We owe our advanced civilization and convenient lifestyle today to the accumulated human accomplishments in science and technology. The information network technology, Internet, gave birth to new forms of communication like Facebook and created diverse and rich social activities. Materials science brought forth semiconductors and the computer built on them made it possible to solve even the long-time unsolved Four-Color Problem in geometry.
Further development of science and technology, however, is indispensable to cope with urgent global issues today such as global warming and energy security. Reflecting this necessity, Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, JAIST, was established in 1990 as Japan’s first graduate institute without an undergraduate program for the purposes of advancing science and technology and training and educating future leading scientists and engineers. Development of science and technology to open up a new world requires outstanding young intellects with intellectual curiosity, systematic basic knowledge and profound interest in advanced research. JAIST education system is designed in response to such requirements. 4,753 masters and 722 doctors have graduated from JAIST and have been taking active roles in the industrial world and the academic wor ld. In 2010, commemorating the 20th founding anniversary, JAIST established Center for Graduate Education Initiative to inquire an ideal graduate education. Thus, JAIST is determined to take responsibility continuously in producing future leaders.
JAIST consists of three graduate schools, School of Knowledge Science, School of Materials Science, and School of Information Science, and 11 research centers. Our faculty members and doctoral students have been carrying out top-level researches in the world. School of Knowledge Science conducts unique and advanced research on knowledge science that supports a growing knowledge-based society. School of Information Science enjoys high reputation in construction of dependable cyberspace and research on verification technology. School of Materials Science draws worldwide attention to its device research based on completely new principles including liquid processing. Thanks to excellent research activities JAIST has constantly been ranked among top universities in Japan in terms of academic publications and research fund acquisition per faculty.
Another characteristic of JAIST is its serious international development. In the field of science and technology JAIST is the most internationalized academic institute in Japan. Receiving many students and faculty from all over the world, now JAIST has more than 30% of its students and 20% of its faculty members from abroad. In addition, all of the doctoral courses are taught in English and the master’s degree program can be completed in English only, too. Our education curriculums for language fluency and communication ability have been further reinforced, aiming to develop active leaders in the globalizing world. JAIST welcomes ambitious young people who wish to take a leading role in the global society.
JAIST endeavors to foster leaders capable of contributing to the making of a future world by creation of science and technology, through its most advanced education and research in an ideal academic environment.
