JAIST was established in 1990 as an independent national graduate university. The university has no undergraduate programs or departments. The school's structure allows faculty and students to work together on research around the clock.
The School of Information Science is the largest science-related education and research institution in Japan. Taking full advantage of the school's innovative character, we have succeeded in gathering researchers who were active in information science research from both universities and the business world. The quality of the research conducted at the school in the 10 years since its establishment has been highly regarded.
The school's curriculum is designed to cultivate professional researchers and engineers. The lecture material is distributed online, and electronic communication is used for submission of reports and other coursework. The flexible and efficient lecture system enables the delivery of advanced web based lectures and courses, releasing students and faculty from the constraints of time and place.
The high speed network, computer facilities and software environment, maintained by the Center of Information Science make it the most sophisticated among Japanese universities.
Each student is offered a generous amount of space, the use of computers, networks, and other facilities that ensure a rich study and research environment. The dormitory, capable of accommodating 45% of all students, has networked computers in each room and ample facilities for couples and families. A free bus service that runs from early in the morning until late at night, provides easy access to the city of Kanazawa and the Kanazawa JR Station. Another bus (paid service) runs to the Komatsu airport, which offers regular flights to Tokyo.
The Center for Research and Investigation of Advanced Science and Technology at JAIST monitors domestic and international developments in the field. In addition to studying the future course of the school's education and research structure in the light of such developments, the center also promotes research partnerships with the private sector and other parties in order to apply the findings of advanced research and investigation to the rest of society.
The Foundation for Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Hokuriku, the largest of its kind in the country, sponsors education and research, international exchange, symposia and conferences, and partnerships with industry, government and academia.
