The twentieth century gave birth to the computer and information networks, and to information-based technology. This new technology continues to evolve, as the twenty-first century ushers in the e-Society. Information science has become indispensable to the fields of development, production, advertisement, sales, and distribution, and is an important component of family life, education, health care, business, and government. We now know that Information also plays and important role in gaining a better understanding about mankind. Information science, dealing as it does with the proper handling and interpretation of information, is essential to helping human beings lead safe and productive lives.

The mission of the Department of Information Processing and the Department of Information Systems at the school is to create a superb educational and research environment that will promote leading-edge research while training future scientists and engineers to assume positions of responsibility in an information-based world.
