Idea and Objective

>> Mission and Objective
Our objective at the School of Information Science is to promote international-level cutting-edge research in Japan. The number of its staff and other factors make the School of Information Science at JAIST one of Japan's leading information science faculties and departments. The school, therefore, is well-positioned to cover a broad area of research. Moreover, one of the key features of the school since its establishment has been to focus on basic research in anticipation of developments in the field of information science.

>>Taking Advantage of the School's Unique Features to Promote Research
JAIST is one of the few graduate universities in Japan. Its students hold degrees from a variety of departments of other universities, since JAIST has no undergraduate programs or departments. Although, from an educational point of view, this may present a problem at times, the unconventional structure of this institution gives it a unique ability to encourage independent and creative thinking. Taking full advantage of this distinctive feature, while great importance is attached to basic research, strong emphasis is also placed on interdisciplinary research

>> International Activities
Ongoing collaboration between faculty members and researchers from all over the world is part and parcel of academic life in the information science field. Every year the faculty organizes international conferences and workshops. School of Information Science offers Graduate Research Program (GRP) for deserving and qualified students. This is a new graduate-level program aiming at providing the state of the art education in the rapidly progressing field of computer science and information technologies.

>> Support for International Research and Technologies
The Software Engineering Group of the School through TJTTP is presently engaged in an international research and technical assistance program with Thailand; expanding such efforts into other Asian countries is a mission of the school. By introducing the school's excellent research environment to young researchers from other countries, the school hopes to contribute to both education and research.
