JAIST-VNUHN Project Office was established on 25 June 2007, and located at the University of Engineering and Technology of VNUHN. JAIST-VNUHCM Project Office was established on 21 November 2011, located at the Headquarter of VNU-HCM. JAIST Office has the following tasks:

  1. Recruitment of excellent Vietnamese students
  2. Coordination of the lecture courses in joint training programs
  3. Enhancement of the relationship with JAIST alumni
  4. Promotion of exchange programs and publishing services of JAIST
  5. Monitoring the affairs of collaborative research and exchange of researchers
  6. Other miscellaneous services necessary to achieve the purposes of the Office

JAIST Office in Vietnam is managed by its Director and assisstant secretaries. The Office functions under the direction of JAIST and in connection to partners in Vietnam and JAIST visiting professors from Vietnamese institutions participating to the joint education programs.

  • Collaboration with Vietnamese institution

The academic exchange agreements and collaboration between JAIST and institutions of Vietnam in Science and Technology has been established more than 10 years ago

  • March 2000: Academic exchange agreement between JAIST and VAST (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology), JAIST and HUS (Hanoi University of Science).
  • October 2002: Academic exchange agreement between JAIST and HUT (Hanoi University of Technology, recently named Hanoi University of Science and Technology).
  • December 2004: Academic exchange agreement between JAIST and VNUHN (Vietnam National University at Hanoi)
  • May 2006: Academic exchange agreement between JAIST and VNUHCM (Vietnam National University at Ho Chi Minh City).
  • May 2009: Academic exchange agreement between JAIST and Hue University.

Hundreds scientists of the above institutions in Vietnam and JAIST have visited each other and worked together in various workshops, conferences, joint or bilateral projects. In recent years, the collaboration is strengthened via two joint education programs and joint research projects. There have been about 200 students from Vietnam in master and PhD courses at JAIST. Most of them are young teachers and researchers of the above institutions in Vietnam. Until now, the number of Vietnamese students graduated from JAIST in master and doctor programs are 44 and 46, respectively.

  • Two joint education programs

Together with various types of scholarship from Japan for Vietnamese students, since 2007 JAIST has two joint education programs with scholarship from the Ministry of Education and Training, Vietnam (MOET) through its Vietnam International Education Development (VIED, http://www.vied.vn/en/default.aspx).

1) VNUHN-JAIST joint education program on nanotechnology
University of Science (HUS) of VNUHN and JAI/;ST carry out  the joint education program on nanotech. The key points of the program include:

  • 10 master and 10 PhD students each year.
  • First year at HUS with lectures given by professors of JAIST and HUS.
  • Master students spend the second year at JAIST for completion of their study.
  • PhD students spend the next three years for their research (including a half year at HUS working with co-supervisor in Vietnam).
  • Degrees are given by JAIST.

2) FIVE-JAIST joint education program on information science and knowledge science
  Five institutions in Vietnam

University of Science (HCMUS) of VNUHCM
University of Technology (HCMUT) of VNUHCM
Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST)
University of Engineering and Technology (UET) of VNUHN
Institute of Information Technology (IOIT) of VAST

(hereinafter referred to as FIVE) and JAIST carry out  the joint education program on information technology and knowledge science, in brief FIVE-JAIST program. The key points of the program include:

  • 10 master and 10 PhD students each year.
  • Master students spend the first year at HCMUS with lectures given by professors of HCMUS and JAIST and the second year at JAIST for their study.
  • PhD students usually spend the first year at JAIST for getting enough credits from the lectures and determination of the research topic, then one and half year at FIVE institutions with co-supervisor in Vietnam for the subtheme and the main research, and lastly one and half year at JAIST for completion of their research.
  • Degrees are given by JAIST

Since the academic year of 2010, students recruited to these two programs will have a chance of Japanese education (of 50 sessions each 45 minutes) in Vietnam before going to Japan. The Japanese course is given at Hanoi by Faculty of Oriental Language and Cultures (University of Languages and International Studies, VNUHN) and at Ho Chi Minh City by Department of Japanese Studies (University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNUHCM).
