Study of Intelligence C Summary of Lecture 7 on 1st July, 2002, by Fujinami A. Participants We had 14 participants with one TA for this 7th lecture. B. We have done the followings at the seventh lecture: 1. Opening (20 min.) 2. Warming up and stretching by Shun (30 min.) 3. African dance (50 min.) Lecture 1, 2, and 3 comprise an introduction to `Body and Mindf problem. Lecture 4, 5, and 6 helped us to get an access to our own experiences. Lecture 7 provided us with a material to think of eshared cognitionf, which will be a key to investigate what Self is. We look into what the notion of Self is in the next session, where we read `The Fragile Self Deploying Itselff, an interview with F. Varela. We look for volunteers for the Bateson and Descartes, two for each material. Any volunteers? ================================================================= 9th ( 8th July) An experiment of sensing 10th (10th July) A cybernetics explanation 1 (Reading Bateson) 11th (10th July) A cybernetics explanation 2 (as above) ================================================================= 12th (15th July) A Descartes game 13th (17th July) On Cartesian approach (Reading Descartes) ================================================================= ------19th July ---- Final report (1st version) 14th (22nd July) Group session: Examination of each report 15th (24th July) your final report due; conclusion ================================================================= ------25th July ---- Notification of the result Lecture 8 on 3rd July 2002 1. Introduction 2. Warming up and stretching followed by 5 minute break 3. Reading the Varela interview ‡@ Ohsawa-san ‡A Makinen-san 4. Reflection: List up the points to be noted in the interview 5. Yours suggestion: How to evaluate your performance in this class? ‡@ Report (as suggested by the lecturer) ‡A Play (as suggested in April) ‡B Performance, dancing (if you like a challenge) ‡C Your work, photo, picture, drawing, novel, sculpture, etc. ‡D Fight, e.g. sumo wrestling ‡E Marathon, e.g., a short run from JAIST to Kenroku-en ‡F What else? 6. If you choose to write a report for the final examination, the topic will be: What is Self? I evaluate your report either as A, B, or C: ‡@ C (fair): You understand how Self is conceived in each approach. ‡A B (fine): You understand how different each approach is in which respect. You should also clarify how they are related to each other, i.e. the relationships between them. ‡B A (excellent): You understand how Self is conceived and differently approached by each school (or trend) of Cognitive Science. You provide us with some new insight or important ideas concerning Self. You can alternatively discuss how the ideas we learnt in this class can be applied to other areas of research such as knowledge management. 7. Your overall performance will be assessed by referring to the followings: ‡@ Your contribution to the class. If you explain about an article or some chapters of a book in one of the sessions, you will be given an extra point. ‡A You can write a report on a subject picked up in one of the sessions as an extra. The report should be a survey in the area and be useful for other participants in the class. Please consult the lecturer for the topic you would like to investigate. Coverage and preciseness are more important than originality in this task. ‡B Final report. (tentative) Minimal requirement is to understand the materials precisely. We appreciate your originality, too.
