[Preface]

During the past several years, many independent joint symposiums were organized focusing on advanced hybrid materials between Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) and Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), Pusan National University (PNU), Kyungpook National University (KNU), Inje University (Inje) in Korea, and Vietnam National University, Hanoi (Hanoi), Institute of Chemistry, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, China (ICCAS). Through these symposiums, we could have fruitful results from the symposium, and at the same time, importance of collaboration not only in research but also in education, exchange of scientists and students, encouragement of younger scientists, multi-university alliance, and mutual benefits is strongly realized.
To further pursue and strengthen the mutually beneficial collaborations among Asia-Pacific universities, reorganization of such symposiums was proposed to unify into one international symposium "International Symposium on Advanced Materials in Asia-Pacific Rim" (ISAMAP), supported by active scientists at JAIST, PNU, KNU, Postech, Kwangju Institute of Science and Technology (K-JIST), Daegu University (Daegu), Inje, Hanoi, ICAS, Zhenzhou University, China (Zhenzhou), Chulalongkorn University, Thailand (Chulalongkorn), King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMIT), and Fukui University (Fukui), Kanazawa University (Kanazawa), Toyama University (Toyama), Kanazawa Institute of Technology (KIT), Niigata University (Niigata), and Nagaoka University of Technology (Nagaoka), Japan.
The aim of the symposium is not only to discuss deeply on the research results on advanced materials and technology, but also to widely strengthen the basis for such research activity from the view points of education, collaboration, exchange of scientists, and encouragement of younger scientists in Asia-Pacific region. The symposium consists of plenary session on "education, collaboration and contribution to society", and technical session including invited talks and poster session, presented by individual researcher on nano science-technology, and advanced materials. This symposium will provide an interactive environment for the world's leading scientists to discuss about the important topics.
The symposium is held during March 14-16, 2004 at JAIST, which will be the new first international symposium under new organization. The second symposium will be held in Hanoi organized by Prof. Nguyen Van Noi, and the third will be in Pusan by Prof. Chang Sik Ha. Active participation and future organization of this symposium are open to every scientist in Asia-Pacific rim.
We sincerely hope that many active researchers will gather, understand each other, and actively discuss on the mutual interests in research and education activities and for the development of this important science and technology for the people's life of future generation.
