• SCSI patches for various kernel versions.
  • These are same fundamentally. These are modified to avoid to reject by changing code of /usr/src/linux/driver/scsi/scsi.c when we apply the patch.
  • To apply the patch, you change "root" user and execute following commands.

    cd /usr/src/linux/drivers/scsi
    patch -p1 < (patch filename)
    

    • dvd_scsi_patch-2.2.16(The version 2.2.16 does not include the discription of DVD-RAM.)
    • dvd_scsi_patch-2.2.13(I checked to the kernel 2.2.13 - 2.2.15. From kernel 2.2.13, the kernel supports Panasonic DVD-RAM drive officially. However it contains a bug, so your system may hang up or reboot suddenly when you use DVD-RAM drive. Therefore you must apply this patch.)
    • dvd_scsi_patch-2.2.1(I checked to the kernel 2.2.1, 2.2.5, 2.2.7)
  • If you use 2.0.x, first, apply 2048 patch (Please refer below).
    • dvd_scsi_patch-2.0.36
    • dvd_scsi_patch-2.0.35

• Can we use DVD-RAM drive which is Hitachi GF-1050 ?
  • One day, I received an e-mail from Mr. Lewis. He has a DVD-RAM drive which is Hitachi GF-1050. He tried to patch using dvd_scsi_patch-2.2.1 from this page below, however the DVD-RAM drive did not work.
  • He would like to know about boot time message of my machine. Therefore I send the message (a part of /var/log/messages) to him.
  • Then, he could modify the patch for GF-1050. The modified patch is here (I ask him to send this to me).
  • How to use this patch is the same as the way of using the patch of Panasonic LF-D100J. Please refer below (How do I introduce linux-2.2.1 ?).
  • (In passing, he use Adaptec 2940UW.)

• Can I use UDF format of DVD-RAM ? (read-write OK!)
  • The DVD-RAM drive use both FAT format and UDF format on Windows. On Linux, we use usually ext2 format, moreover, VFAT of Windows and iso9660 format of CD-ROM, but we can not use UDF format.
  • In an article at comp.os.linux.hardware, a Web page was introduced. According to the Web page, we can access UDF format. We can access UDF format as read-write mode using new version.
  • You work following process.
    • su
    • cd /usr/src
    • tar xfvz udf-0.8.3.tar.gz
    • cd udf-0.8.3
    • cd patch
    • make
    • (Perhaps you encount an error if you are introducing new kernel. Please execute "cd /usr/src/linux; make dep" before above "make", then try again.)
    • make apply
    • cd /usr/src/linux
    • make menuconfig
    • There is an entry about UDF on filesystem, therefore you must check it Y or M.
    • make dep; make clean; make bzlilo; make modules; make modules_install
  • Reboot your Linux system.
  • Coming up the system, then you make a mount point.
    • mkdir /mnt/udf
  • Now, you test to mount.
    • mount -t udf /dev/sda /mnt/udf
  • (After the test，you may modify /etc/fstab. General user can mount using the command "mount /mnt/udf".)
    • vi /etc/fstab

       
      /dev/sda  /mnt/udf  udf  user,noauto,ro,suid,exec 0 0

• How do I introduce linux-2.2.1 ?
  • I use "egcs", therefore I compile the optimized kernel for pentium.
  • Now, I use DVD-RAM drive without the work for 2048 patch.
  • The size of kernel is big. Therefore I compile using "make bzlilo" alternative "make zlilo".
  • I have used pcmcia-cs of version 3.0.6, however it can not use. Therefore I introduce pcmcia-cs of version 3.0.8.
    • cd /usr/src/linux
    • Modify -m486 to -mpentium at line 73 in /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/Makefile. And if you use Pentium Pro, modify -mpentiumpro on the part of CONFIG_M686. The modified Makefile is here.
    • cd drivers/scsi
    • patch < dvd_scsi_patch-2.2.1
    • make dep; make clean; make bzlilo; make modules; make modules_install
    • cd /usr/src
    • tar xfvz pcmcia-cs-3.0.8.tar.gz
    • cd pcmcia-cs-3.0.8
    • make config
    • make all (If you encount an error, try "make clean". Then perform again "make all".)
    • make install

• How do I use DVD-RAM drive ?
  • I bought a DVD-RAM drive LF-D100J which is the product of Panasonic.
  • The DVD-RAM is usually recognized by Linux as CR-ROM. Therefore you must work following process. (If you use linux-2.0.35, 2048dif-2.0.35 and dvd_scsi_patch-2.0.35).
    • su
    • cd /usr/src
    • patch < 2048dif-2.0.36 ## Here is the original Web page.
    • cd /usr/src/linux/drivers/scsi
    • patch < dvd_scsi_patch-2.0.36
    • make menuconfig
    • Check "Support SCSI" to Y or M.
    • make dep; make clean; make bzlilo; make modules; make modules_install
  • Reboot your Linus system.
  • Make a partition using "fdisk".
    • fdisk /dev/sda
      • n (make new partition)
      • p (primary)
      • 1 (select 1 at primary)
      • 1 (start cylinder)
      • 303 (last cylinder: if only make 1 partition.)
      • w (write & quit)
  • Then, format.
    • mke2fs -b 2048 /dev/sda
    • (The system makes sure you. Therefore you answer "y".)
  • Make a mount point.
    • mkdir /mnt/dvd
  • Now, you test to mount.
    • mount /dev/sda /mnt/dvd
  • (After the test，you may modify /etc/fstab. General user can mount using the command "mount /mnt/udf".)
    • vi /etc/fstab

       
      /dev/sda  /mnt/dvd  ext2  user,noauto,rw,suid,exec 0 0
