JAIST Summer School on

Computational Geometry and Graphs

---All the Expenses Will Be Covered---

July 27-31, 2009,

Hakusan Seminar House, Japan

Computational Geometry and Graphs are two important areas in Theoretical Computer Science.   The school is targeted at (graduate and undergraduate) students and postdocs who have some basic knowledge on algorithms and want to study more algorithms in computational geometry and graphs.  It provides basic knowledge and perspectives of this field.  JAIST welcomes gladly participations of young students wide from the world.  JAIST will cover all the expenses including travel expense.  Those who want to participate in the school should send e-mails after filling in  application forms to Prof. Tetsuo Asano together with e-mails from supervisors if students.

l       TOPICS: Computational Geometry and Graphs

Ø       Detailed Topics:

²      Molecular Biology in Computational Geometry

²      Art Gallery Problems

²      Facility Location Problems

²      Constant-Working-Space Geometry Algorithms

²      Interval Graphs

²      Recent Development in Origami

l       TARGET: Students and Postdocs who have some basic knowledge on algorithms and want to study more algorithms in computational geometry and graphs

l       DATES: July 27-31, 2009 (Mon-Fri)

²      Detailed Schedule is here.

l       LOCATION: JAIST and Hakusan Seminar House, Japan

²      Nearest city: Kanazawa, Ishikawa.

l       APPLICATION: Send an e-mail for application directly to Prof. Tetsuo Asano (t-asano@jaist.ac.jp) with an e-mail from supervisor confirming status.

Ø       Application form is available here.

l       DEADLINE: Application must arrive by the deadlines:  1st: May 30, 2nd: June 13, 2009.

l       NOTIFICATION: One week after the deadlines.  The result will be notified by e-mails.

l       SUPPORT: All the expenses including airfares are covered. Since there is an upper bound on the total amount of support, we have to solve some combinatorial optimization problem to choose students.  We need some time for the selection.

l       ACCESS: Kanazawa is located in Hokuriku region.  It is about 2 hours by train north from Kyoto and one hour by airplane from Tokyo.  The nearest airport is Komatsu International Airport.  There are direct flights from/to Narita Airport.  Kansai and Nagoya Airports are about 3 hours and half away from Kanazawa by trains.  For access to JAIST, visit the page:

About JAIST

First Independent National Graduate University without Undergraduate Division
JAIST was founded in October 1990 as the first independent national graduate school, to carry out graduate education based on research at the highest level in advanced science and technology. JAIST aims at creating a new model of graduate education for Japan. JAIST was incorporated into a National University in April 2004.
Admission Criteria for People of Diverse Backgrounds
In our admission decisions we place the most significant weight on the motivation of the student as demonstrated in the personal interview. JAIST admits highly motivated students, including advanced undergraduate students (who have completed at least three years of undergraduate study), professionals, and international students, regardless of undergraduate specialization.
Development of Human Resources for Society
We train our students in a specialized field combined with interdisciplinary knowledge of related disciplines. Through our educational program the students gain a thorough understanding of fundamentals and develop problem-solving skills.
Outstanding Faculty

Our faculty members are first-rate researchers. We recruit professionals with outstanding achievements at the leading edge of science and technology.  They come from all parts of the world, from other universities, and from top industrial research and development institutions.
Collaboration with Society and Industry
JAIST strives to work with the regional community as well as industries worldwide by promoting collaborative research and accepting commissioned research. We use various modes of cooperation utilizing visiting faculty chairs, endowed chairs, endowed chair, and laboratories operated jointly with other institutions.

About Kanazawa

Kanazawa is one of Japan's foremost castle towns.  The city boasts many places of historic and aesthetic interest, such as the splendid Kenrokuen, known as one of the three most beautiful gardens in Japan, and lshikawa-mon, the commanding gate to the old castle grounds.
In Kanazawa, one is acutely aware of the changing seasons. Not only is Kanazawa's natural scenery a colorful delight year-round, but every seasonal change is so carefully celebrated in Kanazawa's traditional cuisine, decor and yearly events that one comes to feel as if there are many more than four seasons.

You can find more detailed information about Kanazawa at the following page:
