Skills and background we are looking for in prospective students

Students are expected to have strong interest and problem awareness for collaboration and way of working in organization; passions for generating, practicing, and implementing their own idea. It is desirable that students have background knowledge about organizational theory or media development skills, but it is not essential.

What you can expect to learn in this laboratory

Students are expected to acquire 1. Skills for analyzing individual and organizational work process and identifying problem, 2. Skills for determining their own research theme and realizing it throughout survey, system development, and experiment, 3. Skills for constructing and expressing logical story throughout practicing thesis writing.

I am interested in the mechanism to realize high-creative-performance organization/team which can produce innovative ideas. Since various issues have been discussed in organizational theory, I focused on actual human activity to produce new knowledge. Combining perspective from organizational theory and information science, I have conducted researches to support work activities by applying sensing and data analysis technology.

(1) Analysis of working behavior

This research visualizes and analyzes creative individual/team working behavior by applying behavior task tracking method, communication measurement device, and questionnaire. For example, I have analyzed communication network in company R&D department and designer’s activity process.

(2) Research of collaboration tool

This research focuses on tools to activate communication such as awareness and information sharing support systems for physically distributed offices and remote work environment.

(3) Improvement of methods for knowledge creation

Field work, brainstorming, idea convergence method, and prototyping are the effective methods for discovering and developing new ideas. I try to improve these methods by providing computer aid. For example, I have developed the field work review support system by displaying analysis result of sensing data captured in the field.

Teaching policy

Students are requested to learn research topics of the laboratory and determine their research theme throughout seminar discussion considering their background skills and research interest. To deepen the theme, students are expected to practically conduct survey, system development, and experiment not only theoretical imagination. They can receive coaching and supports to proceed their research and be treated as colleague to challenge unknown problem together.
