JAIST signs MOU with the National University of Laos
VIENTIANE – The National University of Laos (NUOL) and Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on 21 March that encourages academic exchanges between the two institutions.
“We are keenly aware of the quality of higher education provided to Laotian students at Japanese universities,” said NUOL Vice-President for Academic Affairs Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phetsamone Khounsavath at a signing ceremony held at the Dong Dok campus of NUOL. In his speech, JAIST Vice-President Prof. Dr. Yusuke Kawakami, who officially represented the Japanese institution at the ceremony, declared: “We must deliver our best efforts to ensure that the MOU that is signed today between our two institutions is brought to fruition.”
The MOU encourages the two institutions to cooperate in developing education and scientific exchanges for faculty, staff and students, with a particular focus on the enrollment of talented Laotian students from NUOL in a Masters or a PhD program in any of the three Schools of JAIST, The Schools of Information Science, Materials Science or Knowledge Science. This endeavor is made possible through JAIST’s internationalization efforts and financial support, with a long-term goal of training high-level professors and researchers at JAIST who will return to the Lao PDR to contribute to the scientific and technological development of their country. The MOU is a five-year agreement.
