Tunable Dual-Thermoresponsive Core-Shell Nanogels Exhibiting UCST and LCST Behavior
A core-shell nanogel composed of crosslinked poly-(N-isopropylacrylamide) as the core and poly-sulfobetaine shell is prepared by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization.
These nanogels exhibit tunable dual thermoresponsive behavior, i.e., lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and upper critical solution temperature (USCT). A distinct core and shell were visualized using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, which clearly shows a sulfur-rich shell and a sulfur-deficient core.Transition temperatures can be easily tuned by changing the molecular weight of the constituent polymer.
These nanogels can be efficiently used in temperature-triggered delivery of therapeutic proteins and drugs.
