3D-Polythiophene Foam on a TiO2 Nanotube Array as a Substrate for Photogenerated Pt Nanoparticles as an Advanced Catalyst for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

■Abstract
In the field of fuel cells and lithium-air batteries, oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has been rate-determining step, and researches have been widely carried out on development of ORR electrocatalysts based on carbon/platinum composite materials. However, electrochemical stability of carbon based electrodes is not generally very high, and there has been need to seek for alternative materials. In the present work, thiophene was electropolymerized onto TiO2 nanotube using ionic liquid as vector, which resulted in formation of honey-comb type polythiophene based on TiO2 nanotube template. To the obtained organic/inorganic hybrid electrode, platinum nano particles were deposited by sacrificial reagent free photo reduction method. The electro-catalytic activity of the obtained electrode for oxygen reduction reaction was evaluated, and excellent catalytic activity was observed. Analysis of impedance measurement results indicated that electrode-electrolyte interfacial charge transfer resistance was extremely low in the present system.
