Tips on how to prepare for online classes

The purpose of this email is to provide information to new students who
are struggling with network connection and VPN connection in preparation
for online classes starting on April 20.

In particular, there are many students who are having difficulties in
setting up their PCs due to the problems with digital certificates
system, so we have summarized the ways to avoid these problems and make
preparations easily.

1. Wireless LAN Connection
There are two types of wireless LANs (SSIDs) currently available, one is
SSID=NEWCOMER which is a wireless LAN for guests that is valid until
mid-May, and the other is SSID=JAIST which is permanent wireless LAN with
digital certificate authentication. To attend the online classes from
April 20, it is sufficient to connect to the network with SSID=NEWCOMER.

To connect to a wireless LAN with SSID=NEWCOMER, use the distributed
"Wi-Fi Service for New Students, Account Notice as well as Terms of Use"
for more information.

For those who are familiar with PCs, the procedure for dealing with the
problem of connetion with SSID=JAIST is as following URL. This is a
little more complicated, but please try it if you prefer.
** You don't have to deal with it right now **

2. Configure VPN
To take online classes from off-campus (home, etc.) or to access the
academic affairs system, an VPN connection is required in addtion to
Internet connection.

An VPN connection is a service that makes your device (eg. PC, Smart
phone) outside JAIST or in a guest area look as if it were in JAIST
research area. So you can safely use services that are only available
from on-campus, even off-campus.

There are two types of VPN connection in JAIST such as
  (a) Authenticate with a digital certificate: vpn.jaist.ac.jp
  (b) Authenticate with a one-time password (OTP):
vpn-sso.jaist.ac.jp .

To attend the online classes from April 20, it is sufficient to use VPN,
(b)one-time password (OTP) authentication. There are many people who
have difficulties in setting up their PCs due to the problems with
digital certificates system, so you don't have to use (a)authenticate
with a digital certificate.

To connect to VPN with a one-time password (OTP), refer to the following
URL for more information.

4. Temporary Inquiry Response
On April 18 (Sat.) and 19 (Sun.), there will be a temporary service for
those who do not have the minimum requirements for online classes.
In order to respond to more students with limited resources, we ask that
you refrain from making inquiries as follows on both days.
- Unable to connect to the wireless LAN, SSID=JAIST.
- Unable to connect to VPN with vpn.jaist.ac.jp
