The Derivation of City - Hakui-shi-
「羽咋市」の由来

A long time ago, during the reign of the eleventh emperor Suijin-tenno, this area lay benighted by a dark cloud of plague and banditry. In addition there lurked in the Takizaki forest a large poisonous bird, which made the villagers sore afraid. Prince Iwatsuki-wakeno-mikoto, however, came to their rescue. He valiantly smote the large poisonous bird with his arrow, whereupon his three faithful hounds pounced upon the bird and ate its feathers. This is how the place name Hakui (eat feathers) came to be. The place name appers in the current kanji on wooden record tablets excavated from the ruins of Heijogu palace, but in the mediaeval period the kanji 白井 and 羽喰were also used.

　 むかしむかし、第11代垂仁天皇(すいじんてんのう)の頃、この 地に疫病が流行したり、盗賊が横行するなど不吉な暗雲におおわれ ました。加えて滝崎の森には「大毒鳥」が日夜出現、村人を大いに 悩ませました。そんな村人を救いに現れたのが、皇子「磐衝別命 (いわつきわけのみこと)」でした。皇子は首尾よく「大毒鳥」を弓 矢で射止めました。すると、皇子の3匹の忠犬が「大毒鳥」に飛び かかり「羽を喰わえてきた」とのことです。ここから羽咋の地名が 起きたとされています。史実的にも、平城宮跡から出土した木簡に 「羽咋」の字が見られ、中世期には「白井」「羽喰」とも記されて います。1671年、時の加賀藩主の命により「羽咋」の字に統一され ました。(羽咋市の資料より)
