STUDENTS OUT OF UNIFORM
制服無しの児童

In Uchinada-Machi's Onebu Higashi Primary School's "Casual Week" began on September 25, and almost every student came to school in ordinary clothes. The government and public agencies first introduced the idea and coordinated the week with the time of the seasonal school uniform change. Unchinada is the first trial location in the prefecture. The students showed positive reactions.

The stusdents wore their yellow caps for safety and whatever else they wanted. As the twenty-fifth was a comparitively warm day, may of the boys opted for the T-shirt-and-shorts look. "We can be a little stylish, so I"m happy," and "We can go play right after school, so it's convenient," were two of the many comments the students who welcomed this week made.

The school principal siad, "More students than we expected came to school in their ordinary clothes, perhaps more than 90%. Yet we hope the studetns keep up their neat appearance."

"Casual week" lasts until October third, and as of the fourth the students will wear their winter uniorms.

Gauging the reactions of the students, parents, and guardians, there may be plans for another casual week in the spring when the students change to their summer uniforms.
