Scholarship for Short-term Study in JAPAN

Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) offers scholarship for qualified international students who are accepted by a Japanese university under a student exchange agreement on a short-term basis from 8 days to 1 year between Japanese university and their home higher education institution (hereinafter referred to as "home institution") outside Japan.

Exchange Program for FY 2019 in JAIST Asian Short-term Stay Program

Amount of Scholarship Monthly stipend JPY 80,000

Period of Stay 2 months *approximately 45 to 60 days

Eligibility
Applicant must satisfy the following conditions.

  1. Applicants do not currently possess Japanese citizenship.
  2. Applicants are enrolled in a home institution as undergraduate or graduate students.
  3. Applicants are officially nominated by their home institution.
  4. Applicants demonstrate excellent academic and personal records at their home institution.
  5. Applicants do not have sufficient financial means to study Japan.
  6. Applicants will not receive any other scholarships that exceeds JPY 80, 000 per month.
  7. Applicants have a GPA of 2.30 / 3.00 or more, which is calculated using JASSO's GPA calculation method shown below, based on a transcript for the previous academic year.

<Calculation Formula>
[(Number of grade 3 credits × 3) + (Number of grade 2 credits × 2) + (Number of grade 1 credits × 1) + (Number of grade 0 credits × 0)] ÷ Total Number of Registered Credits

  • When calculating GPA, round off to two decimal places.
  • If your host institution does not use a credit system, convert each course taken with one credit.

Application
Exchange coordinators of JAIST will inform a contact person of each home institution about application. JAIST will select students based on application documents. Students who got an unofficial decision by JAIST will need to submit necessary documents for enrollment in JAIST as non-degree seeking students.

Payment procedure
Scholars have to sign on an attendance sheet once a month at the International Student Section and can receive scholarship in cash by hand at the Accounting Section, JAIST.

Report Submission
One week before returning to his/her home institution, scholars must submit a H-1 (JASSO) report to JAIST.

NOTE
The number of JASSO scholarship awards has been decided by JASSO within the budget.
JAIST applies for the JASSO Student Exchange Support Program every year and the scholarship has been granted to JAIST over the past few years. However, we cannot guarantee that the scholarship will be granted next year as well.

We are not taking applications for FY2020.
