Graduate School/Areas

Overview:

For the past 30 years, JAIST has been researching and teaching the creation of knowledge and intelligence, which are the most important management resources of an organisation, as well as strategic management. With the advancement of artificial intelligence and robotics etc., it is now possible to process information far beyond human capabilities. In this situation, the most important management resource for organisations is Intellect, which uses attention and reasoning to perceive the environment and aims to adapt and create it. Furthermore, there is also a need for Human wisdom, which is the ability to creatively conceive and implement ideas for values that humanity pursues (common good), such as freedom, peace and wellbeing. This research area will develop the knowledge based research that has been accumulated by the former Transformative Knowledge Management Research as a transformative resource for building a society where people can experience and pursue well-being. The aim is to conduct research and education that can create intelligence and human wisdom from the perspective of science and technology policy and management for the survival and development of humanity. To this end, this research area will study the creation, evaluation and design of wisdom to solve the problems that arise in the systems and institutions under study, from individuals to organisations and networks, and from nations to the planet, using human wisdom as the unit of analysis.

Education policy:

In this research area, we aim to address the issues faced by multilayered systems and institutions, from the individual to the organisation, society and even the global scale, with ‘wisdom’ at the core. Specifically, we will promote research into the creation, evaluation and design of wisdom that integrates the evolution of science and technology with human values and ethics. Through this, we will not only elucidate the fundamental mechanisms of human wisdom and construct a new design theory for social systems, but also develop human resources who will lead the way in innovative knowledge creation to support a sustainable future society. We will propose new social systems based on ‘wisdom’ that are meaningful for human society, and aim to develop as a global policy and management research hub.
