Mr. WANG received Student paper award in NCSP'21

Mr. WANG, Rui(2nd year master's student in Unoki lab of Human Life Design Area) received Student Paper Award in RISP International Workshop on Nonlinear Circuits, Communications and Signal Processing 2021 (NCSP'210).

The 2021 RISP International Workshop on Nonlinear Circuits, Communications and Signal Processing (NCSP'21) was held as an online virtual conference on March 1 to 2, 2021.
This workshop is open to researchers from all over the world. In particular, the organizing committee encourages students to present their preliminary results that are not necessarily ready for publications in technical journals.

■Title
Method of Estimation 3D DOA Based on Monaural Modulation Spectrum

■Authors

■Abstract
Human has an amazing capability to monaurally locate sound source by using various acoustical cues. However, it has not yet cleared how human can perceive the direction of arrival (DOA) of a sound source in 3D space using monaural acoustic cues. Our previous study proposed a 3D monaural DOA estimation method based on monaural modulation spectrum (MMS) but has a large mean root-mean-square-error (RMSE) in estimation. In this paper, to improve our previously proposed method, we redesign the polynomial regression models for MMS features. We carried out 51,840 simulations with several signal types and multiple subjects to simultaneously estimate the azimuth and the elevation of an incoming sound source. Evaluation results indicate that the improved method could adequately estimate the DOA in 3D space with an overall RMSE of 5.59 degrees. Compared with the overall mean RMSE of 22.02 obtained by our previous method, the RMSE of estimation decreased by 74.6%

■Comment
It is a great honor for me to receive the student paper award at RISP International Workshop on Nonlinear Circuits, Communications and Signal Processing 2021 (NCSP2021). NCSP is an excellent international academic conference, bringing together outstanding researchers from all over the world in the field of signal processing. To be able to attend such a meeting is a valuable opportunity for me to show my research. We made a research of single ear sound source localization, which can help us to further understand the human auditory mechanism, and can bring many practical applications, such as hearing aids for patients with single ear deafness.
As an excellent university, JAIST has beautiful environment and strong scientific research strength. Looking back on the precious time of two and a half years, there are many good memories. Here, I would like to thank Unoki Sensei for his patient guidance and help, which enabled me to obtain valuable knowledge and wonderful scientific research experience. At the same time, I would like to thank Akagi Sensei for his generous help. I would like to express my gratitude to my colleagues in the laboratory for their help. Finally, I would like to thank my family for their support and concern.
