■A brief summary of the article
Many cities today are not suitable for promoting the health and well-being of residents, as they are dominated by highways and unwalkable environments. There has been growing recognition that this is a global concern, particularly in ageing societies, and therefore redesigning cities to support walkability and healthier lifestyles is an urgent priority. In this piece, Dr Koohsari (Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) and Dr Kaczynski (University of South Carolina)-- both ranked among the world's top 2% most influential scientists (Stanford/Elsevier)-- outlined future directions to move this interdisciplinary science towards creating healthy and walkable cities. They also highlighted the importance of recognising virtual environments alongside the physical environment, and the role of artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool to support healthy urban design science.
