Ohdaira laboratory encourages students’ initiative, logical thinking, and communication skills. We provide various training opportunities to improve these skills.

Step to getting your master’s degree in Ohdaira-lab

Master’s 1st

Semester 1-1

Taking lectures in JAIST campus. It is recommended that you earn most credits for fundamental subjects by the end of Semester 1-2.

Semester 1-2

June
Formal laboratory assignment.
Writing a report on vacuum technology, which is required to handle our equipment.
Operation training on experimental apparatus under the guidance of supervisors.
Deciding the theme for your major research project.

Summer leave

Semester 2-1

Taking lectures on specialized studies.

December
The research plan presentation held in JAIST.

Semester 2-2

Carrying out experiments on your research.

January / February
Deciding the theme for your minor research project.
What is the minor research project? – In order to broaden your perspectives, you have to plan another research activity outside this laboratory.

February
Writing a draft of your research proposal for the major research project. Supervisors’ approval is required for this proposal.

March
Presentation on your research in a domestic conference, such as JSAP spring meeting.

Master’s 2nd

Semester 1-1

Carrying out experiments on your research.
Giving M1-students operation training and advices for their studies.

Semester 1-2

Writing an abstract for a presentation in an international conference.

July
Participating in a domestic exhibition on photovoltaics energy.

Summer leave

Semester 2-1

Presentation in JSAP fall meeting.
Presentation in an international conference, such as PVSEC.

December
Submitting the paper on your minor research project.

Semester 2-2

January
Writing an abstract for JSAP spring meeting
Writing your master’s thesis.

February
Master’s thesis defense: Presentation on two years’ research achievements in front of examiners.

March
Presentation in JSAP spring meeting
Your master’ thesis has been issued.
Degree conferment ceremony
Advancing to the doctoral program or working in industry.

About life in the laboratory

A day in Ohdaira laboratory

8:00 Morning meeting

Sharing daily schedules with each other and having a brief research discussion. Keeping regular hours is important for students. It is also recommended that we finished our experiments in the daytime by starting early, to prevent unexpected accidents.

17:00 Writing papers or abstracts for conferences
18:00 Playing tennis or badminton

Refreshing the mind and body and building physical strength are also important in research life.

Saturday

9:00~12:00 Study meeting

Picking up an English paper which is related to your research, translating it to Japanese and explaining the contents to everyone, then having a discussion together. That help you to develop your knowledge and to improve your language skill.

The end of every month

9:00~15:00 Monthly meeting

Making a presentation about your experiments in the month, its results and considerations. This meeting is conducted in English.
