JAIST-UI-ITB Human Information Science Hub : Toward Multimodal Human-AI Communication in Society 5.0

The international symposium "JAIST-UI-ITB Human Information Science Hub: Toward Multimodal Human-AI Communication in Society 5.0" was held on January 23, 2023. This symposium aims to form a science hub - a full-fledged collaborative research between researchers and academia Japan Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (JAIST, Japan), University of Indonesia (UI, Indonesia) and Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB, Indonesia).
Associate Professor Sakriani Sakti conducted as PI and JAIST representative. Three research laboratories joined the team on the JAIST side, including Unoki-Lab, Okada-Lab, and Sakti-Lab. In addition, from the Indonesian side, several labs related to natural language processing, spoken language processing, and image processing from the Faculty of Computer Science (UI) and the School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics (ITB) also joined the team.

This symposium marks an initiative for full-fledged collaborative research. It also provides a forum for researchers and academia in Japan and Indonesia to share achievements and challenges in developing innovative technologies to achieve human-machine communication related to natural language processing, speech processing, image processing, and multimodal interaction. Special thanks to the Dean of UI Faculty of Computer Science: Dr. Ir. Petrus Mursanto, M.Sc, and the Dean of ITB School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics: Dr. Tutun Juhana, ST., MT, for attending the meeting and providing an introductory talk.

In detail, the symposium was done online with a total of 32 participants. The program started with the opening speech from the executive and representatives from JAIST and the Indonesian side. Then, in the second session, we had presentations by researchers/academia from JAIST, UI, and ITB to introduce their research experiences and technology in developing AI for human-machine communication. After that, in the third session, we had an intensive discussion on JAIST-UI-ITB Science Hub Research Collaboration.
Finally, we had presentations on ongoing research by students or young researchers from JAIST, UI, and ITB. The research presentation by UI and ITB students is the result of JAIST-UI-ITB's initial collaboration through the JST Sakura Science exchange program in which ten students from UI and ITB conduct research work at Sakti-Lab (Human-AI Communication, Co-Learning, & Collaborative Intelligence Research Laboratories) during January 5th-25th, 2023.
