Informal Laboratory Assignment Prior to Enrollment

Successful applicants for the admission to the master’s program are eligible to apply for an Informal Laboratory Assignment Prior to Enrollment. This will give them a chance to meet a professor of the proposed laboratory to get informal consent to join the laboratory before they enroll in JAIST.
Students who are under “International Priority Graduate Programs (MEXT program)”, “Collaborative Education Programs (dual program)” and successful applicants who have passed the Examination for Admission on Recommendation for Overseas Residents have already obtained Informal Laboratory Assignment, so it’s unnecessary to take this procedure.

Those who wish to apply must follow the instructions below:

  1. Applicants contact the Educational Service Section by email at kyoumu@ml.jaist.ac.jp. They can choose a maximum of three laboratories to visit.
  2. Proposed professors contact the applicant to set up a date for a visit.
  3. Laboratory visits must be completed within following periods:
April enrollment: by the middle of March before your enrollment
October enrollment: by the middle of September before your enrollment
*Whether or not you can apply for this assignment depends on the availability of each laboratory. Please therefore contact the Educational Service Section as soon as you can.
  4. Professors inform the applicant whether they offer an acceptance. Applicants make their final choice.
  5. Applicants submit the form for “Informal Laboratory Assignment Prior to Enrollment” to the proposed professor by email. Download the form here.
  6. Applicants receive the decision from the professor to confirm.

All Master’s program students will be assigned to a laboratory tentatively when you enroll in JAIST (temporary lab assignment), and 3 month after enrollment, you will be assigned to the laboratory formally (formal lab assignment).
The students who have obtained Informal Laboratory Assignment Prior to Enrollment will be assigned to the proposed laboratory priority.
The following students who have no Informal Laboratory Assignment Prior to Enrollment will be assigned at the period of temporary lab assignment.
・Students who are under “International Priority Graduate Programs (MEXT program)”
・Students who are under “Collaborative Education Programs (dual program)”
・Successful applicants who have passed the Examination for Admission on Recommendation for Overseas Residents
