Chinese painting is quite challenging for beginners, as it requires mastery of brush techniques and ink density control. However, how these difficulties manifest during copying tasks across experience levels remains unclear. This study aims to clarify differences in drawing processes by comparing subjective perceptions and observable behaviors among beginners and experienced learners during Chinese painting copying. Based on semi-structured interviews with instructors, we identified brush technique control and ink density manipulation as core challenges. We selected three traditional Chinese paintings of varying difficulty as copying tasks. Participants from both groups completed these tasks while being recorded by dual angle cameras and using think-aloud protocols. The results show that beginners exhibited more frequent pauses, hesitant brushstrokes. In contrast, experienced learners demonstrated more structured progression and fluent execution. These findings suggest that the primary challenges in learning Chinese painting are not only from task complexity, but from the cognitive demands of perception-action transformation and the acquisition of tacit procedural knowledge. This study provides process-level evidence and offers implications for the design of supportive systems in HCI.
I am truly honored to receive this award. This research was conducted with the aim of gaining a deeper understanding of the drawing behaviors and cognitive processes involved in Chinese painting. Throughout every stage of the project, from research design and data collection to analysis and paper preparation, I benefited greatly from the support and guidance of many people.
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Associate Professor Haoran Xie for his invaluable supervision, as well as to all members of the laboratory and the participants who generously contributed to this study. Their support made this research possible.
This award serves as a strong motivation for my future work. I hope to continue investigating learning and creative processes in artistic activities and contribute to the development of both traditional art education and Human-Computer Interaction research. I sincerely appreciate your continued guidance and support.
