I encountered this performance last night on YouTube. At first listening, the music sounded rather bizarre, grotesque, and even a bit mad. After a while, I remembered that some writer had pointed out that he was trying to deconstruct music. The performance confirms her suspicion. Puzzled by the Mephisto Waltz, I was thinking of his performance on the train on my way back from my home town, questioning why he had to play it that way.

It seems that he hates music but cannot stay away from it owing to his attachment to it. I am sorry that he can only approach to the music by dissecting it. It seems that he does not want to be involved in music at all, but he wants to keep a contact with it in the least possible manner. Sad, really. His loss, his departed partner, casts a shadow on him.

Darkness in his mind almost fragmented the piece of music, but it is saved on the edge. I believe that he still loves music and hope that he will make some recording in the near future. For the moment, his
music only makes me sad.
